Canoe & Kayak Mandatory Registration CANCELLED!

No registration for kayaks & canoes!

Thankfully, after much public outcry this ridiculous idea of registering our canoes and kayaks has been set aside. Never in the history of the Canadian canoe & kayak have they ever required registration. In an ongoing effort to tack extra charges and paper work onto anything that they can get away with the Canadian government tried to tack on a five form registration that required photos, tonnage etc, plus fee of every canoe and kayak used for commercial use.

We all recognize that this would have been a foothold that later would be followed by the requirement of ALL canoes and kayaks to be registered. Thankfully, organizations like Paddle Canada lobbying on behalf of all paddlers to get the requirement changed achieved success. Also, there was a huge public outcry on forums across the internet with comments about the next thing will be running shoe and hiking boot registration.

Hopefully we have seen the end of this but don't sit back and forget about it. The government has a long history of shelving something, letting time pass and dragging it back out again with reasons of why it will work or should work.

I had visions of reading headlines this summer like "Group of canoeists held for questioning after paddling in what seemed like an organized group with unregistered canoes" or "12 year old girl charged after paddling an unregistered swim ring while leading her brother around the pool" (Under those rules anyone leading has to be paddling a registered canoe or kayak)

Careful hikers, cyclists or even those that like hats - anything may be required to be registered under that thought process.

Following is the official release from the Canadian Government.

GOVERNMENT OF CANADA ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR HUMAN-POWERED VESSELS, SMALL MOTORBOATS

CALGARY — The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced important changes to Transport Canada’s small vessel registration requirements.

Owners of human-powered vessels, such as canoes, kayaks and small sailing vessels, as well as small vessels with motors less than 7.5 kilowatts (10 horsepower) will not have to register their craft with Transport Canada.

“We do not believe Canadian boaters should face onerous regulations to go canoeing and kayaking, which is why registration requirements for all human-powered vessels, small sailing vessels and small motorized vessels will not be required,” said Minister Strahl.

This registration will continue to be required for commercial river rafts, government vessels and for any vessels where registration is necessary for safety reasons.

For those vessels that still must be registered, Transport Canada is also introducing a new simplified process. For a vessel or a fleet of vessels, Transport Canada will now:

accept a single application form; and
charge a $50 fee, valid for five years.

Owners registering a fleet of human-powered vessels must also provide:

the number, length or approximate length, and type of vessels in the fleet, including the Hull Identification Number (HIN) if available.

Transport Canada must be informed:

of a change in ownership of a vessel or fleet; and
if the vessel or fleet has been disbanded.

“What doesn’t change are the safety requirements. Small vessels, such as canoes and kayaks, their owners and users must continue to adhere to all safety requirements under the Canada Shipping Act.” added Minister Strahl.

Paddling Film Festival in Waterloo, Ontario.

Trivia question of the day! What is the world's biggest fish? Whale Sharks!

Better questions may actually be: what in the world is a whale shark? Aren't whales mammals and sharks fish? YES! But Whale Sharks are actually just a fish! (Not some sort of weird cross breed.) They are named after whales for their size.

Previous studies have shown that What Shark can get up to 20 meters, but recent studies suggest that they could possibly get even bigger!

Canada's Coldest Sport involves, of course, ice.

Ice Canoeing is Canada's coldest sport. It involves traditional looking 29-foot canoes, and five people on a team. This team not only has to be able to handle the intense cold of the air and water around them, they have to have stamina, be skilled at what they do and most of all - be a good team.

Although the boats are traditional looking, the race is not so much. The racers spend more time running on the ice, pushing the canoe forward, than actually paddling in the canoe.

Sea kayaking doesn’t get better than off Vancouver Island, British Columbia Canada. This is an area so vast and wild that it can’t be described in a quick paragraph. Vancouver Island is located on the west coast of Canada and is about 460 kilometres (285 miles) from the North-West tip to the South-East tip and is about equal to the size of Taiwan.

Vancouver Island is lucky to boast mountain ranges, the highest peak at 2,195 meters or 7,201 feet is called Mt. Golden Hinde. The Hinde is roughly the geographic centre of Vancouver Island and in part the cause of such variances in weather patterns across the island.

Sea Kayaking Trip in Desolation Sound, British Columbia

The west coast of Vancouver Island is mainly exposed coastline that tends to be damp and incredibly beautiful on the outside Long deserted sandy beaches, islands and inlets mostly wild run up the coast to the top of the Island. If you were traveling up island from South to North you would notice immediately that between the two ends of the island the environment is very different. In the South around the city of *Victoria the climate is mild and compared to the North quite dry. As you passed the centre of Vancouver Island it would become immediately apparent that the climate is much wetter and cooler and continues to increase in dampness as you head to the top end of the island.

To the sea kayaker, the change in weather brings much to see in increased vegetation, water falls and more. On the inside or East side of Vancouver Island the water is even cooler as you pass **Campbell River (about the halfway point) and head into Johnstone Strait. Although the West side of the island is beautiful and wild the East side has the rushing tides, channels and islands that attracts sea kayakers from around the world. Because you are nestled between the large mountains of Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia the area tends to experience less winds and no ocean swell at all. This makes ideal conditions for sea kayaking.

As with all sea kayaking trips the wise paddler travels in groups of well organized participants. For the waters surrounding Vancouver Island you will need intimate knowledge of tidal currents and tides. However related, the tide rising and falling and the tidal currents have no relation when it comes to timing.

Sea kayaking Desolation Sound - John Bestfather Style

Out For Adventure guide John Bestfather lead an incredible trip into Desolation Sound a few weeks back. Yes they had the perfect route (Out For Adventure departs from Cortes Island for this trip) and perfect weather, and yes they ate great food but John's unique style of guiding is a real boon to those adventurers that travel on his trips.

Message received from OFA guides Mack and Pete who are camped with their group in Johnstone Strait as I post this. They saw lots of HB's today or Humpback Whales in layman's terms today and getting ready to come out tomorrow. The weather has been stellar!
OFA Guide Dougal reports seeing at least 10 Killer Whales on his first day, today as well as seals and eagles. Wow! Good on ya Dougal and group. They are camped in the Johnstone Strait right now on a Pure Orca adventure.

Sea Kayaking Photography
My group is just approaching the shore but I hold them from landing because a barge just passed and we are about to get a good size wake in the next few seconds. As I do my visual check of my group to be sure we are all in position I spot it - Jack (I changed the name to protect the guilty) has ignored my instructions, popped his skirt off for a picture and left his pricy SLR sitting in the cockpit! Its too late. The wake rolls under us and when the bouncing and hooting from the much amused group fades we quickly realization that Jack's camera is soaked with salt water.

It sounds crazy but the only chance electronics have when doused with salt water is to thoroughly flush it with fresh water and then be submerged in clean fresh water and leave it there until you can get to a repair shop. The repair shop can then try to spray it out with special cleaner and attempt to save the doomed piece. But with D/SLR cameras, there are so many small moving parts and the design so intricate that it's likely to be destined for the recycling depot. Now Jack could only blame himself for ignoring my instructions but many paddlers have had incidents that cost them their camera equipment from dropping overboard or finding a hatch leaked and soaked their camera gear or even had a waterproof case fail.

Over the years we have developed some simple but effective methods for dealing with camera gear while sea kayaking but would like to get your input and suggestions for protecting your camera gear. How do you store it? What camera do you use? Do you find a waterproof point and shoot is good enough?

We are gathering material for a show on this subject and any input from you would be much appreciated. Give us your tips, or lessons or even stories about sea kayaking and photography and well use any information we can.

Does a Sea Kayaking Rudder Slow You Down?

Does Your Rudder Slow You Down?

I imagine that most people reading this particular blog entry would probably have been sea kayaking and I would guess one step further that you have paddled a sea kayak with a rudder enough to have stumbled onto this conversation. Or maybe not. With respect for those whom have never paddled a sea kayak or perhaps not enough to have come across this question or sat within earshot of others discussing it allow me digress a little with some background.

The Sea Kayak Can be Dragged by a Spider

What I am referring to here is the type of sea kayak that has a rudder built onto the back deck. Sure there of plenty of kayaks without a rudder and I won't get into those with this blog post or I will have far too much to write. I'm sitting in a Starbucks that has no A/C plugs available for my computer so I am limited by my battery capacity. Yes that was a lame excuse but I'm leaving it in here.

Look at the picture, you'll see the rudder is on the back deck and is connected via cables (which you can't see) to foot pedals at the kayaker's feet. Technically the purpose of the rudder is counteract weathercocking, or the tendency of the kayak to continually steer one way when in wind. You set the rudder at an angle to offset the wind and paddle with equal effort on both side thereby avoiding the pain of paddling hard on one side only. For this, in many situations the rudder works well. Many people, especially newbies tend to use the rudder to steer the kayak - that's okay it works too.
Matt, the kayaker pictured here is a very experienced, professional sea kayak guide that paddles without his rudder in the water. Why would he do that? It was designed to be on the boat, why not use it? Well, if you dig a little further you'll find a whole club of kayaker snobs that consider themselves "above" using the sea kayak rudder (get the pun). If you were to attend a sea kayak symposium, or go out with a group of guides or experienced kayakers chances are that most if not all would refuse to use thier rudder and would refere to them with contempt! Why? "Because it slows you down!" they'll say. But are they really snobs or are they just more in tune with the sport?

Sea Kayakers Lets be Logical

You being a logical and intelligent being will look over the rudder system and see that the rudder is made up of a flat piece of metal or sometimes plastic that resembles a dull knife about 6 inches long. This rudder is held vertical at the rear of the kayak and literally cuts its way through the water in the direction of least resistance. You would be among many if you assumed that the kayaker must be able to feel a leach or water spider if they attached themselves to the kayak. but surely that level of sensitivity must be reserved for Olympians or other highly tuned, very rare humans - the type that can tell the speed difference of running with or without a mustache or ear rings.
You take the initiative to test this incredulous theory and being the ultra sensitive and adaptable person you are you jump into the sea kayak. With the rudder up get used to nuances of the craft (of course, you really have to be very experienced to feel finite details of any sport, but lets pretend for the sake of making my point). Then after a sufficient amount of time you deploy the rudder and low! The kayak actually feels like it is dragging slightly! Unbelievable! How can a tiny flat blade drag enough to be measured let along have the paddler feel it? The answer is leaverage not drag.

Leaverage affects the Sea Kayak More than Drag
After many many hours of paddling and talking with many other kayakers, many of them guides, I had yet to find anyone that could explain this phenomenon.
A number of years ago I figured it out and I now take every opportunity to explain it to interested kayakers what is going on.
Imagine if you will the kayak is only six inches long and sitting on your table. A single kayak is paddled with the paddler sitting directly in the middle of the kayak taking a stroke alternately on each side. Each time the paddle is dipped into the water and moved it has a leverage effect on the boat pushing the boat away from the paddle. Set your mini kayak on the end of one finger and image a stroke on the right side - the kayak swings to the left away from the paddle stroke. Your next stroke is on the left and again the boat swings away from your stroke this time to the right. You probably now see that the back of the kayak swings from side to side while you paddle. This natural movement is what drives canoeists crazy making many of them switch sides to compensate.

The Rudder Effect
The farther you get from the pivot point, which is under your seat, the more exaggerated the movement - leverage. What is the farthest away from the seat at the rear of the sea kayak? The rudder! That rudder is now being shoved side to side as you paddle and yes you can feel it and yes it will slow you down. If you understand how a basic mechanical lever works you will realize that the further away the rudder is the more effect is has slowing the boat. So the longer the boat, the worse the rudder effect. It would be like someone holding the back of your boat as you paddle. As the rudder is pushed to the side it is now forcing its widest part against the water, back and forth the little blade pushes and slows you ever so slightly.

There you have it! In a nut shell, its what I call the Rudder Effect.

Why is a double sea kayak unaffected by this principal?

Do You Love Your work?

This is one of those mornings when I come into my office and while I wait for my computer to boot I can't help but realize that I love work! Sick? Perhaps.
Okay in keeping with political correctness and full disclosure I'll admit that not every day is like this but most are. Sure we get those days where things go wrong or you have to deal with something you don't want to but for 95 percent of the time - I love what I do for a living and for the remianing 5% I just go through the motions. Not with disdain or hate - just going through the motions.
I decided to blog about this because I often forget how fortunate I am to be doing this and was curious if anyone out there in cyberspace has similar feelings or not and if not, what keeps you doing the 9-5?

Avoiding Tax on Vacation

Have you noticed the confusion surrounding BC and Ontario's implementation of the new HST or Harmonized Sales Tax for tourism?

Even a call to the government agency charged with administering this new tax, (which I might add has not even been officially passed yet) results in some very confused and vague officials that seem to lack a firm grasp of transition rules. Undoubtedly the result of Poor guidance, none the less, this makes it very difficult for the vacationer or the business owner to get a firm handle on how much to pay or charge.

Well, after much digging, prying and double checking Out For Adventure has it sorted out properly and posted on the website for customers or even other business owners to get the real scoop at http://outforadventure.com/hst. It has links that direct you right to the government of British Columbia website page that confirms the details and will save you a lot of searching.

Although Out For Adventure has had this posted for a while, I wrote this today after speaking with a business owner friend that had been unable to sort it out yet to help inform those that have been frustrated getting proper information on the new HST.

The wisdom of taking some cash on an all-inclusive trip?

I just had an email discussion with an industry colleague about clients bringing some cash on a trip to grab opportunities that arise. We state in our Welcome Package that you could bring some cash with you.

No matter whether you are coming on an adventure with us or if you are taking a bus tour in New Zealand it makes perfect sense to pack some extra cash on your person for the trip.

Many vacations are all-inclusive or have all-inclusive sections - especially those that involve outdoor adventure. Often we assume that since we'll be in the wilderness or off the beaten track or even on a ship that we don't need to have any cash on us- not true! You may miss out on any stop or even an unexpected encounter with a fisherman, artist, backwoods seller of whatever. Or you may want to give a guide on the trip a "special Thank-You tip".

An example of such an encounter is our Sea Kayaking with Killer Whales trip that takes you by sea kayak into the wilds of British Columbia. Four or five days of camping seems to offer no use for cash but wait - mid way through the trip we usually visit a remote Killer Whale research outpost. The outpost is bridled heavily by funding cutbacks and has resorted to selling some souvenir hats and CD's from the outpost. How cool is that? To grab one of these unique products and support a legitimate cause directly? But if you don't have some cash on you, you're out of luck and have to watch while your fellow travelers get a great souvenir.

In my opinion you should always have some cash on you whenever you are on vacation. Whether it's for unexpected souvenirs or for an emergency taxi or bus ride, or even to satisfy a mugger in a foreign country - it just makes perfect sense. To go one step further, I think you should do this in your daily life. I have run into a few occasions when a person is distressed because they have had an unexpected need for a little cash.

I'm not talking about a wad of cash or a bank roll, I mean just an appropriate amount that won't break your bank account or kill your budget if spent or even lost. Just pack it in case you find a need. If you get home and haven't touched it, then take yourself and a loved one to dinner and consider a freebee or better still stuff it into an envelope for the next trip.

Go explore the world - because are eyes are wide open when we surround ourselves with something new.

Poor Economy - Best Time for Vacation in 30 Years

We have all read about the deals being offered in the adventure industry right now. This may be the best time in 30 years to go on vacation. I can't believe the deals that are being advertised out there, and although some economists will argue that this is the times to hunker down and hold on to what you have - I think the opposite.

Think of the big picture for a moment, life is an unknown quantity. We never know how much time we really have although we all like to estimate the max. Then we get so hung up on "survival" we forget to live.

A quick search for deals on adventure vacations will quickly reveal discounts that have probably never been available before. I think it is especially important for us to escape, and rejouvenate our soul. You can't just work all year and pass on vacation til next year! Not me. It strikes me that the discounts are our salvation.
